I have just spotted that William (Bill) Arthur Scarr, MA, G2WS, was President of the RSGB in 1950-51.
No relation to me though.

I knew a little about Bill, but not that he was a past RSGB president.

He built his own 144/5 MHz (2-metre) equipment back in the late 1950's and early 1960s before the advent of synthesised transceivers. These would probably have been either AM or SSB-only radios.

He also donated the 'Calcutta Key' which is awarded for,
"Outstanding service to International Friendship through amateur radio".

See http://www.qsl.net/zl2amj/rsgb.html for further details.
